FAMILY OUTINGS AND ACTIVITIES
Both Pea Island and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuges offer a host of out-of-door activities designed to bring you “up close and personal” with nature and its critters. The region is home to some incredibly unusual ecosystems where the coast meets the more inland pocosin wetlands. The result is a “buffet” of excursions including the following:
- World-class birding at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
- Out-of-this-world paddling at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
- Wildlife galore at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge including waterfowl, bears and hawks/eagles
- Unusual plant communities found only in coastal areas dotted with pocosins
- Splendid walks with nature at both Pea Island and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
- The chance to be witness to the endangered red wolf in its last remaining habitat
Grab your out-of-door gear, pick up your camera and binoculars, and bring your family to both refuges to see nature in all its glory.
