Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society

Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society is a non-profit organization established and incorporated in 1989 by a group of local citizens to provide support for Alligator River, Pea Island, and other National Wildlife Refuges in eastern North Carolina.  the Society is one of the oldest “Friends” groups created to support the National Wildlife Refuges in the United States.

Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society supports directly Pea Island and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge which are situated in Dare and Hyde counties in eastern North Carolina.  In addition, the Society continues to provide a support role for the other refuges in the region that are administered by the Alligator River Refuge office in Manteo.

The purposes of Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society are threefold:

  • Generate funds to support programs and activities
  • Assist in the recruitment of refuge volunteers
  • Provide a voice for the members of Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society at a local, regional and national Level

Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society designed, constructed, and staffs the Visitor Center and Gift Shop at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.  It also provides support for the refuges’ large and diverse volunteer programs and K-12 educational outreach activities.

Currently the Society is actively fund raising to construct a large Visitor Center and Administrative Complex on Roanoke Island serving as a gateway to all of the region’s eight refuges.
